I like how he tunes his drums, many people probably never even think about that as much as a summer's playing. Genesis ABACAB is when I first really noticed this, but listening back he had it going on (his tuning) for awhile already, it just (to me at least) became more prominent through the mixes onward and solo stuff especially.
It's great. The four sides live (UK release) is the better version. I'm going by the LP, maybe all the CDs have the all-live tracklist.
I first discovered Genesis with 'A Trick of the Tail'. Loved the band, loved Phil. Collected everything band related, everything I could find that Phil had played on. Loved his first few solo albums Incredible drummer. Okay singer. Sometime in the late 80s, early 90s, I just couldn't stand to hear him (solo) anymore, just complete overexposure. Now, I can enjoy some of his solo songs, but it's been a long, long time since I've sat down to listen to an album Mentioned above that he was an incredible drummer, but as his solo career went on, drumming kind of took a back seat. I remember seeing him on one of the late night talk shows in America in the mid-late 80s and him complaining that people forget he's a drummer as well as a singer. I remember thinking to myself "Dude, have you listened to your recent stuff? How would they know you're a drummer?" Always seemed like a decent guy but after reading his autobiography recently, it came across as a series of excuses for everything that had gone wrong in his life/career. Too thin skinned; I guess he was known to call people who had given negative reviews of his/Genesis' albums. Many years ago, on the old Genesis board, he actually started posting to defend himself to the people who said he ruined Genesis. I thought it came across as whiny and petty. He was incredibly successful.....who cares what the critics or disgruntled fans say.
I have the proper 3 Sides Live version on CD (and LP) with the 3 sides of live + 1 side studio outtakes. I disagree that the 4 sides live Euro version is superior, but of course that's just a matter of opinion.
Not a fan of wife No 3, nor of older rock stars courting beautiful younger women, but to provide an alternative to the rather disturbing picture posted earlier -
I like Keep it dark, but it took a while to grow on me. For me Whodunit is the pits ... I know it was meant to be funny and irreverent or whatever, but it irritates the crap out of me. Abacab would be a topline Genesis album with that removed or replaced
I think Phil's is one of the more interesting and unlikely stories in rock music. Truly. One poster suggested that Phil has an appeal that spans generations and tastes and that's absolutely the case. Even though I have somewhat conflicted feelings about aspects of his career and music, he's probably my favourite musician and what he has accomplished is staggering. L Shankar suggests he is a "genius". Nice to see so much love for his drumming, my favourite. I'll admit I've cried listening to his playing.
It was a big deal at the time and I held it against him for a long time. I'm not bothered at all now. Tony Blair was a letdown after it all anyway.
Phil is a legend of rock and pop music. Fantastic drummer and great singer... generally a great songwriter too. For anyone who missed out, or has any interest. Here is the thread guide for the Genesis Album Thread Here is the thread guide for the Phil Collins Album Thread
Perhaps it was taken out of context and spun against him. The Guardian later reported, On the day before the 1992 general election, Bizarre columnist Piers Morgan quoted Collins as saying: “If they put up taxes, I’d consider going abroad.” This single line, mutated via Chinese whispers into a cast-iron vow to emigrate if Labour won, proved disastrous. “I remember getting letters from nurses saying, ‘That’s it, I’m not buying any more of your records,’” he says glumly. “I didn’t mean it the way it came out.”
Yeah, history has been kinder to him there, but at the time it was really damaging to his reputation in the UK at least.
I enjoy a lot from his Genesis and solo output and much of his drum playing. I'm even a fan of this infectious little ditty...
*150 million albums sold worldwide, 98% of sales not due to his great drumming But yeah, he sucks at everything but drumming
I believe it. I've never seen a direct quote from Phil Collins about Labour. He has said he's never been Tory though. We should get back to the music though. I don't think anyone will appreciate it if the thread is taken down.
Agreed Mark, imagine having that replaced with Paperlate or You Might Recall? that track was a very rare mistake in an almost flawless output of great albums.
I can’t stand this woman. 40 plus million from divorce 1. Lives with him again from 2016/2019. It’s coming out in the press now that she allegedly had 4 male escorts during 2016/2019 they have all come out in the last week and spilled, while living with Phil and now she is living in his 40 million mansion with her new husband and demanding 20 million more! I can see how pretty she was when he met her, but she looks more like Pete Burns from Dead Or Alive after all his surgery in the pics I have seen recently. I cannot stand gold diggers.
is that the ex-wife he's currently fighting? It was in the news recently.. his daughter Lily Collins is sometimes in the news too, she's now in some show and movies
