Domino is a killer track. If you've seen them live, you probably like it even more. Tony's synth work is really imaginative. I suppose I'm not crazy about the orchestral hit patch but, hey, that was pretty unusual at the time. The "pray it would last forever" line is really poignant and touching. I also appreciate the upbeat coda that essentially happily shouts out over and over again that when it's our turn to die, there's nothing we can do. Pretty dry humour there....
"Supper's Ready" is held together by a very strong narrative that links all of the pieces, plus it features the recurrence of several musical motifs at various stages. My problem with "Domino" is that the narrative, such as it exists, is quite weak (or at least isn't very obvious). But I'm glad you like it so much!
I thought you were going to mention the old (apocryphal) rumour that IT was secretly a concept album about nuclear winter!
Yeah there are at least 8 dodgy FM dubs over on the Movement site, sounds like either there were no real decent captures(at least. not on the level of the Lyceum gig) or the transmission was weak but they are out there.
Domino - Excellent track, as this is one of my late night headphone listens. Really taken back with Part 2; The lyrics paint this uneasy hellish surreal imagery and the music that gets my blood going. Phil's synth drums pay off here. I also love both live versions that appears on the IT tour & The Way We Walk concert videos, which has Phil explaining the 'Domino Effect' to audience. Just wish it was retained for the 'The Way We Walk' live album.
In the Archive #2 book, Toby defined both the album and the cover "bold". Not sure what he means though. Probably referring to fan's expectations and the freedom the band took to do what they wanted. As a young folk I thought the cover was one of their poorest but now I like the minimal approach and the use of simple complementary colors.
WHy would I make it up? They were awful that night. They opened with Deep in the Motherlode and were completely out of time. Collins kepted going on about his feet bleeding and pointing at his shoes. They were awful and unable to keep time. My mate and I were there. This wasn't a stadium or arena gig where a band can easily cover their mistakes and demeanour(drunkeness etc) in a massive venue. This was a small 2000 seat venue and we were right down the front(unfortunately!!) Basically its irrelevent if you believe me or not. You weren't there. We Were. Basically, they couldn't play that night they were so out of it.
. I suppose the title could refer to radiation. Maybe the person who did the artwork thought it could and ran with it.
Don't know if this has been mentioned before but there is a tremendous UK Genesis tribute band called Los Endos. Saw them last night and they did a two and half hour show encoring with Supper's Ready. Highly recommended.
While I vastly prefer Suppers Ready, I never found its narrative all that easy to follow, and I find the recurrence of musical motifs just as prevalent in Domino.
I would even say that the motivic work is more refined and dense in Domino, also considering it's a track half as long. Supper has its cloudy moments and without Peter providing "footnotes" on multiple occasions, we would be less sure about their meaning.
Genesis - The Album by Album Thread the recording from the show would say that you must have been the one on drugs ....
Now Alice's Restaurant is an extended piece with a strong narrative and prevalent recurring musical motifs

It was the second single from the album in 1986, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100[2] and No. 22 in Britain,[3] where it was released as the last single of the album in 1987. In the U.S., it also went to No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart in October 1986 and the Album Rock Tracks chart in August 1986. The working title was "Zephyr and Zeppo". The song is a soft rock ballad structured around a guitar riff by Mike Rutherford, who also wrote the lyrics.[4] The U.S. single included an edited version of the instrumental "Do the Neurotic" as the B-side; the UK edition featured the track "I'd Rather Be You". ---------------------------------- I will probably be roundly rebuked, but i think this is a great song. We start with a really nice guitar riff, that is a nice chordal set up that has a good feel and leads us into the vocal. tony is putty down some nice electric piano(?) behind it. Phil is putting down another great vocal. The change into the chorus is smooth and perfectly written and executed. At the end of the first verse the songs takes on a bit of bounce which brings it up another level. There is also a nice rhythmic variation in the vocal, that also adds to the feel of the song. We get a slight dip in the dynamic prior to the next chorus, which again, subtly adds dimension to the song. I supposed to some degree folks may have the "oh it's Genesis doing a ballad again" thing, but they had always done ballads/love songs and this is a particularly good one.
Throwing it all away I did really throw it away, mostly . My go-to condensed sequence was Tonight x3-Domino-Brazilian and especially the transition between the last two is perfect. Taken for itself, it's not a bad song anyway. It flows, does its job. It has a certain Mechanics vibe, I think. Can't hear much of Tony's or Phil's writing input, TBH. The guitar riff has a certain aplomb that I like, maybe just a tad repetitive to me. Not a great fan of the backing "uuhs" though. Overall, there is nothing in this album that I truly dislike or find boring (today). Everything is at least pleasantly listenable, even though I strongly prefer the dramatic tracks. As for the "Genesis doing ballads" thing. I don't think it's truly against ballads. It's more about them being more often than not reminding more of a solo member's output then of a trio composition. Especially Phil, for what I've seen.

Ahhh, “Throwing It All Away” - aka “the ballad on this album that I do like.” On the face of it, there’s nothing ostensibly “better” about this one than “In Too Deep”, but it just has that magic something which makes me want to give it repeated listens. And it certainly doesn’t sound like something that would fit easily on “No Jacket Required”, mostly thanks to Mike’s nice guitar motif. I could really live without all the “dee-ahh-ehhh-ehhh-ehhh” in the live versions, though.
