Thanks, better than the Atlantic even? I never see them in bins over here in the States but yes they seem readily available from European sellers.
I have the Virgin made in Holland PGCD3 for Melt which sounds good to my ears & which I prefer to the now very expensive SACD. I've not heard the US Geffen version to compare it with but the made in Holland PGCD3 should still be available fairly cheaply if you want to try it for yourself.
IV go for the W German Target, should still be relatively inexpensive III I have a US DADC, didn't notice anything bad about it so I never went further @mdm08033 , Michael is the Nimbus that clear of a winner?
Let me clarify that. They won't cost too much unless you obsess over very early sun rays or purple swirls.
I currently have the Japanese black triangle CD of 4/IV/Security and it sounds very nice. Much better than 2002 CD I owned before. But I never compared it to early EU or US discs.
I can't compare anymore. I must have deleted my old American CD from iTunes. I must have done that for a good reason.
The SACD (DSD layer) for III has inverted polarity compared with every other mastering. It sounds better when reversed. Really, try it if you can. Should be the same for the standard CD remaster. My favourite versions are now the Hi-Res downloads that came as a bonus with the vinyl remasters from last year. They are different from the SACDs (although having similar DR values) and IMO, better. I must say that previously my favourite digital versions were the SACDs (DSD layers only) for I, II, III (after polarity correction), and Us; and the Target CD for IV.
I'll try to listen to III since I still have the redbook remaster losslessly on iTunes. Happy listening, Michael
According to an old post of mine: "For III (Melt), we know the V/C [meaning the Nimbus] is peak limited whereas the Geffen isn't."
Ok I got my order in for III V/C before @Plan9 said it was peak limited! Also a V/C for II and the Target for IV all pretty cheap so I hope to sort this out soon. Thanks for the help.
As the original starter of the thread, I have started doing my own comparisons. For the car album, I like the original Atco CD the best. The original V/C disc sounded a bit bright and I wasn't a fan of the remasters or the SACD. For II, I like the original Atlantic CD the best. That's all for now. I will write back after more comparisons are done.
Looking at the Atco entries at Discogs for PG1 the running time for ‘Waiting for the Big One’ is given as 7.26 mins whereas the UK / Europe VC disc is 7.13 mins (just played VC to verify). https://www.discogs.com/Peter-Gabriel-Peter-Gabriel/release/1602106 https://www.discogs.com/Peter-Gabriel-Peter-Gabriel/release/5001952 Understanding that it leads into ‘Down the Dolce Vita’ which is attributed with similar timings also ‘Here Comes the Flood’, is the Atco version really 13 seconds longer and so possibly a different mix to the VC disc? Not enough extra for ‘Slowburn’ to be the discrepancy it seems; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Gabriel_(1977_album)
I sure wish they had made the Hi-Res downloads available for purchase separately instead of an exclusive bundle with the vinyl. Pity...
No kidding. I have no plans on grabbing any more of the Lp's but curiosity has got me on a couple I would probably purchase
Several retailers are showing new vinyl releases for 2/7 or 2/10. Any rumors of the hi-res downloads being made available for purchase separately at the same time?
Consider the high res downloads for your Pono. I picked up the most recent round of 45rpm releases primarily to get those downloads!
