    Hi folks,

I was wondering if there is any thread where we keep an eye and talk about the current or latest Hoffman's work.

Steve, feel free to comment yourself.

    Cheers

Don't quote me on this, but I heard from an anonymous source that Steve is working on a top secret super deluxe remaster of The Mentor's Up The Dose.

I'm still catching up with his previous work. A few days a Who's Next CD was delivered that Steve mastered. Fantastic!

No, it's an old one as far as I know. I did a search here so I'd know which ones to look for and found a copy on ebay.

  11. All kidding aside, Steve has to pay the bills like the rest of us. So @Steve Hoffman what are you up to at the moment?

He didn't master it, he remastered it. Which is the aural equivalent of spell-checking someone's work and making a few changes. All the really hard work has already been done.

Correct, that's what I meant. Thanks for catching that. One the best sounding Who's Next that I've owned over the last 48 years. There is thread though from 15 years ago that Steve does talk about the, "original MCA "Who's Next" CD that I mastered.", quote from Steve.

Sadly, I think it's just one of Dennis Miller's rant performances; he's trying to minimize the plosives in the Shure mics at Chuckles Komedy Klub in Van Nuys...:shh:

    ???

Anyone who starts with the master tapes and masters an album is doing the same work, whether it’s the original mastering or a “remaster”.

Last I remember, Steve mentioned working on some Korean rap project, but that was a while ago.

In a thread from 15 years ago Steve talks about the Who's Next CD that he "mastered" so in my post when I said I bought the CD that he mastered I thought I was using the correct terminology.

I was replying to the comment that said remastering was “the aural equivalent of spell-checking someone's work and making a few changes” - which is absolutely false and a ridiculous thing to claim.

Really, when you already have a template of the original, so you know what you need to change, without quite as much trial and error?

OK, I get what you’re saying. Still, I would hope that a mastering professional would take the approach of trying to get the best sound from the source tapes, without worrying about what was done in the past. Ideally, anyway.
