I need to add Rumours to my collection. Which is the best version to get. I can only consider hires download or CD (I don't have vinyl or sacd capability). Thanks.

I have the recent reissue that has a second cd with alternate takes.

I don't notice a sound quality difference compared to other CD versions.

However, an esteemed forum member, with better ears than I, may lead you elsewhere.

But that second CD is too cool to pass up (IMHO).

This album has had a very large number of releases & re-releases, especially factoring in the whole RE-1 through RE-4 thing with the non-WG original CD. I'm not sure if there is a definitive version, but the West German Target CD, or the Steve Hoffman Mastered 45 RPM 2-LP reissue are serious contenders, mastering wise.

For now, I'm content with the 2004 Rhino 2-CD reissue. Mastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch.
There's some very interesting stuff on disc 2, and, of course, a great, thick booklet.

My favorite digital version is the 2013 remastered CD.

  6. Fleetwood Mac's is not the type of music I like to listen to the most, but I fell deeply in love with "Rumours" because of the fantastic sound of the 45 RPM reissue, remastered by Mr. Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray.

MP-100 is 'warmer' w/a more recessed vocal & more clicks/pops IMO.
None-the-less, they are quite diff & now we all have too know the 'EQ' of the cartridge of the poster [i already knew w/'tables' there were multiple variances this just drove the point home BIG time].

There are two different masterings for the WG target (one with the matrix ending 01 and the other with the matrix ending 04).

    The difference being.....?

Thanks for your input so far guys. As I said initially Lp's are out of the question.
    Anyone heard the hires versions?

I don't know, because I only own the "04" (and the 32XD-350, which has the same mastering as the "04"). I think the "01" is much quieter, like the Sanyo, but also unique. It's also one of the preferred masterings on this forum (alongside the Sanyo). Both the "01" and Sanyo are very rare (I've only seen the "01" on ebay once, hesitated on buying it, and regretted it; the "04" frequently shows up on ebay and can be had for a few Pounds because most sellers don't realize it is collectible). The early non target WG discs also have the same mastering as the "04". The mastering was updated on later US discs - the ones with RE in their matrix (and perhaps later WG discs). Avoid these later discs - I was lucky to get rid of mine.

I have the 96/24 High Resolution version (Super Deluxe) and to me it's the best sounding version of the album I've heard. Even the additional material sounds quite good.

I think I have a few of the Target discs. Will have to find them and see what I have.

I have a terrific sounding Japanese black obi pressing, but the SH 45RPM is far and away the best sounding version of that album on the planet I'm willing to venture. I covet my copy.

You are correct, especially in the case of rumors where the interview is actually interesting.....
