Distant Sky This track has a delicacy that you can hear, see, smell, touch and taste. The keyboard is just holding the song together as a structure. Cave puts his vocal down in such a delicate manner that you feel the words, as much as hear them. Then Else Torp places a beautiful chorus down that manages to lift the song up in such as way as to make it endearing and not just painful. There is remorse, but there is also a sense of movement forward, onward and upward. This album to me is full of these moments and, again to me, is a masterwork in a modern era that spends more time trying to be cool, but sounding trite. This album has some of the best elements of the Plastic Ono Band album, without sounding just bitter. It has some of the best elements of the electronica bands, but without having the vacuous emptiness found in a lot of the lyrics in that genre, and also escaping the trap of being electronic just for the sake of it. The Seeds in every formation have always seemed to have an untouchable ability to create a soundscape that moves beyond just being a backing track. Whether Cave, as the central figure is the reason for this, I am not sure, but it is such an endearing quality and is one of the reasons that I place these guys among the best.
Skeleton Tree Although this song is also in the gentle, mellow mode of the rest of the album, it has a certain feel to it that suggests a relief and a facing of the monster and an overcoming. A gentle triumph. A certain ability to find contentment in the war that is life. "nothing is for free, and it's alright now"
On the whole, for me, this is a moving album, and as I say I felt that way before I was even aware of the circumstances surrounding it. So my love of this album may well have been enhanced by that tragedy, but it certainly wasn't initiated by that. I think this album is worth a listen for anyone that enjoys melancholy with depth. It isn't a big long moan. It isn't a self indulgent purge. For me it is a deep and moving, touching experience.

I get the feeling that they didn't really finish the album off as such. I love the album for what it is, but the live versions of the songs seem to feel a little more formed or something. I'm not sure if it was a conscious decision or if it was just how it went, but that's what it seems like to me.
The live version is more striking and eerie , the vocal delivery is stronger and very passionate , the great piano motif is more upfront and the backing vocals which add a lot makes such a difference . AND its free of the ambient electronics parts which personally i think are too much on the album .
