I don't recall if she quit or was forced into retirement. Once Geller took control over the management of the Presley catalogue, Joan had no role at RCA.

All four (4) Elvis Presley singles released in 1960 were available as Mono AND Stereo and the last first single of 1961, "Surrender" was the last up until the 1969, "Charro" B-side.

A few websites claim she retired from RCA in 1987, but her last credits were in 1984: sides 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11 of A Golden Celebration, the promo-only single "Baby Let's Play House"/"Hound Dog" from the 9/26/1956 Tupelo concert, and a promo 12" The Elvis Presley Interview Record - An Audio Self Portrait.

Has it ever been determined which other shows Deary intended to use for her 1976 amalgam?

I would assume Tucson (Tuscon?) 6/1/76 or Odessa 5/30/76 would be one, as those are the only two soundboards from that year with "Help Me Make It Through The Night".

The rest are up in the air, as those songs were performed regularly.

It's been a strange day. I've been in a reflective sort of mood, and there are all sorts of reasons for it.
This morning after the posts I felt the need to listen to If I Can Dream.... this led me to look at some "reaction" videos, because I saw them there, and was interested in what some of these, generally younger, mainly black folks thought of the song and the performance and all that kind of stuff.
The results were overwhelmingly positive. I know a lot of the "reaction" videos are a little dubious, but there were obviously a lot of folks sincerely moved by the song, and most were surprised by the performance.
I watched way more than I intended to, probably 15 or 20 lol, but it was almost hypnotizing... virtually none of them even stopped the track, and the most common reactions were "I don't even know what to say", "I didn't know he could sing like that", "just give me a minute to get my thoughts together" ....
The overwhelming response was "this song is just so relevant ".....

Anyway, I don't know why I'm sharing this, but it was some kind of weird therapy or something.... and strangely enough, very unlike me, after listening to the song a ridiculous amount of times in a row, it was still effecting me, it was still engaging me, and I almost want to put it on again "riiighhht noooow"... anyway ...

I went through the exact same process as you, Mark. It filled me with some hope and optimism amongst a very dark time in our country. I know it's just music, but it is still amazing how universal our love of great music can be and how healing it can be as well.

  7. Same reaction from me - I ended up watching quite a few of these and really enjoyed hearing the viewer's thoughts. It's fairly easy to weed out the 'fake'ones. It made me glad to see so many people connecting emotionally to these songs (If I Can Dream, In The Ghetto, Bridge Over Torubled Water) and - of course being an Elvis fan - seeing the overwhelmingly positive comments. Love that he can still connect with modern audiences through the message in his songs.

I love seeing young black folks taking the initiative to find out for themselves what Elvis was about, instead of relying on debunked mythology of him being a racist or stealing the "black man's music".

If we all just think for ourselves instead of following groupthink and see ourselves and others as unique individuals we can live in a better world.

Except for Chuck D. I fart in his general direction.

It is interesting to me that it seems like initially the records were replications of the cd's that were released, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but then they seemed to move into releasing them as something slightly different.
For example here, the title of this suggests that it was remixed specifically for this release..... was it?
I don't know, but it seems it gave them a new avenue to walk down in their release program.

    -------------------------------------------------
When this one starts off we get that slightly strained vocal on See See Rider, and a slight hint at one of those possible comedic shows with a chuckle in the vocal quite early. We get the usual showmanship at the end of the song with the lead in to I Got A Woman.
The sound here seems to be very good.
We have a really nice selection of tracks covering a lot of ground, with the usual openers, then we move into It's Midnight which over the course of this thread has been a song I didn't know to one of those songs that I love. We get some sixties with Big Boss Man, Fever and It's Now Or Never as a bonus track. We get a new song If You Talk In Your Sleep, and then a batch of songs that frequently make the live playlist.
From what I can tell so far, this seems like a pretty6 good show. Elvis seems to be somewhat on the cusp of the focused singer giving it a good go, and the distracted comedian, and again from the quick sample I have had of it here, it seems like an entertaining show.

As always I look forward to reading the input from our more enlightened Elvis fans that are much more familiar with this release than I.

    Cheers
    Mark

    Disc 2

The setlist here is quite similar, with some order adjustments, the addition of Promised Land, and the addition of My Boy, Help Me and How Great Thou Art as bonus tracks.
The sound quality seems pretty even with disc 1. The psychological tilt of the show seems to be in line with disc one too. I think Elvis's vocal may be a little more relaxed.

Since my response pertained to the post that claimed Gold Standard singles had the original Sun sound, are you saying the original RCA singles DIFFER from the Gold Standard reissues?

It would be my expectation that the original RCA issues of the Sun sides and the Gold Standard reissues would be the same regardless if they have the original Sun sound or not.

What a lucid, intelligent and heartfelt post POB !!!

Unfortunately, I never bought "A Date with Elvis" on FTD, but I am familiar with the recordings.
However, I do own "For LP Fans Only" and own different variations of both titles.

These are, arguably, two (2) of the best Elvis Presley albums in the catalogue and I have such an infinity for both.

Elvis was surely in development mode during the Army stint and the " Elvis Is Back" LP undoubtedly proves this.

    Great thread.

I have always been intrigued by this FTD.

I never listen to the album, but are these tracks really "Re-mixed" ?

What are the opinions of this FTD on this forum ? In my opinion, I have the LP in my collection and thought it sounded just fine, and the Double Features version sounded even better, but to double dip again and the contents are surely a different story altogether.

It is really interesting to me too. I have no idea to what extent the album was remixed, or if it was a case of remixed for something else, and now available on record.

Most serious Elvis fans are familiar with his August 19, 1974 opening night performance where he significantly deviated from his standard concert setlist, a formula that had been in place since 1970, to launch his summer 1974 Las Vegas casino engagement. One of the interesting aspects of Las Vegas 1974 is that it contains the two concerts from the very next night on August 20 where Elvis aborts his attempts at presenting his revised show, and reverts back to his tired, yet safe and comfortable formula. It is unclear what Elvis' motivations were; some biographers have suggested Elvis was not content with the audience reaction from August 19, yet the aural evidence from the soundboard does not suggest the response was lukewarm compared to normal. Additionally, Elvis received his best reviews in years. It may very well have been a scenario where Elvis' anxieties and depression, coupled with his paranoia from his drug abuse, influenced his decision to return to a perceived safer formula (one of his biggest documented fears was losing his audience). Either way, it was unfortunate to see Elvis abruptly cease his first attempts at a creative and artistic endeavor since 1970 after just one concert. Nevertheless, a number of songs from his opening night set-list remained in the show and were interspersed with his usual concert standards. And while the newer material enhances the otherwise tired formula, these are still two mid-1970's concert recordings and in no way represent Elvis at his best.

This particular casino engagement tends to be somewhat popular amongst 1970's era fans, yet I rarely hear much praise about Las Vegas 1974, which is a bit surprising because these are two of the better concerts from the engagement. While a lot of Elvis' vocal work from the August/September period is generally hindered by impaired, labored and uneven vocals courtesy of his pharmaceutical abuse and emotional state (and soundboard sources do not help the sonic presentation), during August 20, Elvis' vocal work is mostly free of any notable or troubling deficiencies, so in that respect, it is a release worth checking out for those fans interested in the late summer shows. That said, I think Nevada Nights is still the go-to release from this casino engagement because it contains the aforementioned opening night concert, plus an additional standard show from August 21.

  23. The Speedway soundtrack masters were indeed remixed (you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the remixed He’s Your Uncle Not Your Dad... not!) but the good news is these exact same remixes that are on the FTD LP are also on the FTD Speedway CD which I believe is still in print.

The four track masters of the soundtrack songs exist so they were able to do the remixing. I’m going to guess they did this out of necessity to add content to the Speedway FTD CD due to most of the alternate takes not being in the vaults.

A decent review of this FTD release from EIN appears in the link below:
