Another great year for songs. The Beatles and Dylan both had too many top class songs, so for me they had to have their own compilations. Dusty Springfield came out with a bang and just about needed here own.
In context with the other rock songs, the Kinks sounded a few years ahead of everybody else here.
Again I have no doubt that I missed stuff ... and it also gets awkward when the UK and the US had the same songs released in different years and all the rest of it.... between the UK and the US the Beatles had ten albums released in 64 .......

Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive
But to be young was very heaven.

    ... or something like that.

What a fantastic year for singles and Dylan album tracks! Too many to choose from. It would have to be a box set rather than an album.

I know the OP does not include such rules, but I will stick to what I did for 67, meaning only singles (A or B side), released in the US during 64, only one per performer, and a max of 16 as the most that should fit on an lp.

    A Hard Day's Night - the Beatles

Where Did Our Love Go? - The Supremes

Heart of Stone - The Rolling Stones

I Get Around - The Beach Boys

How Sweet it Is - Marvin Gaye

All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks

Dancin' In the Street - Martha and the Vandellas

As Tears go By - Marianne Faithfull

The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

Baby I Need Your Loving - The Four Tops

Bits and Pieces - The Dave Clark Five

    I'm Into Something Good - Herman's Hermits

Dead Man's Curve - Jan and Dean

    My Girl - The Temptations

Do Wah Diddy Diddy - Manfred Mann

    My Guy - Mary Wells

A couple of notes. I Want to Hold Your Hand is probably the single song I most associate with 1964, but it was released in the US in 11/63. For The Supremes I marginally prefer Come See About Me as a song, but Where Did Our Love Go? I associate with the year since I remember first hearing it. For the Kinks You Really Got Me was virtually tied but I had to pick one. For the DC5 I could have gone with Because, but again I had to pick one. For Marvin Gaye I could have gone with about five other songs - oh well. For the Animals I think I actually prefer I'm Crying, but how can you leave House off this list???

    Nice set.
Like I say, it is about what you want. I'm not one to listen to compilations really. For me this is more of an exercise in recognising musical high points in any given year. Which will obviously be different for everyone.
Not everyone would come up with a Dylan compile for 64, but for me it is essential :)

Fwiw I left Dylan off because, surprisingly or not, under my own rules he had no singles in 64.

As for compilations of different performers, they can be a real mess. I think of them as mixed cassette tapes more than what was actually available in compilations of different performers. The exception, which is sort of the model I think of especially the max 16 song idea, comes from Motown. They used to do greatest hits compilations which worked great for their more singles oriented bands. Here's a great example:
