Agreed. The song is fine, the arrangement a bit pedestrian, and the vocal more than competent (although he over-sings on occasion), but I have never found the recording overly appealing.

RE Loving Arms and some other Stax recordings. I REALLY prefer the Ferrante mixes found on the 70s box and the Promised Land expanded over the original mixes. If only he had not added digital reverb though. But the original analog reverb was more pronounced, so there's that. Ferrante's mixes seem to delineate each instrument better, and has more punch in the bass and percussion. Plus, Elvis' voice tends to be more upfront. All good qualities in my opinion.

I don't like the remixes. I think they sound strange, maybe it's the mastering and the digital reverb. But some of the remixes are longer than the original mixes.

I had to go back and read this again. Thank you DirkM! After we have seen big hair (giant brain) Elvis, Elvis at the old country store shack ringing up his records on the cash register, a giant 6 story tall Elvis in traffic, a photo that is so poorly cropped, it's laughable on the Aloha inner sleeve, and two major album covers with Elvis having severe facial convulsions, Colonel Parker was concerned that there wad a bit too much pink in this cover photo. ??????? Lol. Talk about trimming the hedges as the house burned down. Lol

I enjoy this track as well. This song is almost, or at least seems to me to be the epitome of a seventies song. It has a cool funk about it and was arranged and played like it may have been going on an Issac Hayes album or something. Personally I like that.
The tone of Elvis' vocal is unusual, but it is certainly not bad.
This track was released as a single in 1979 also, with There's A Honky Tonk Angel on the b-side. I charted at number 6 and 5 on the US billboard and cashbox country charts respectively.
I really like the guitars at the beginning. Such a cool drum groove also. I think the backing vocals here, although fairly high in the mix, suit the song perfectly.

To me it was cool that Elvis was putting these kind of songs on his so called secular albums. As virtually always, this track for me is a stand out. A great lyric, really nice musical arrangement, and an excellent vocal.
So far to me there isn't really a weak spot on the album, except for the somewhat poorly thought out track order ... and that is mainly the opening song.
It is quite remarkable to me that this album followed Raised On Rock, which I don't hate or anything, but these songs and performances are an awful lot better.

One of the few highlights of the "Good Times" LP. A nice and dynamic combination of Gospel and R&B. Still, I believe that the first take is way more exciting with Elvis really into it ("Hot damn, wooo wooo!...") even if he sounds at times a little bit hesitant and unsure. Great job from the backup vocals too.

I Got A Feelin' In My Body is pretty good, but something feels off about it. The opening is arresting, the overall sound is there...there's just something missing, something that would really sell the song. Part of the issue for me is the backing singers. They add to the song when they're responding to Elvis, but they distract from it when they're singing behind him, like on the title phrase. They're a bit less intrusive on the outtakes and Our Memories Of Elvis mix, but I'd love to hear a mix that completely eliminated them.

If That Isn't Love starts off slowly and never really goes anywhere. I tend to skip it.

I heard the Ferrante mixes first, so they'll never sound strange to me in that regard, but I do tend to prefer the original mixes. The Ferrante mixes are clearer but not as soulful, if that makes sense. Promised Land, in particular, sounds best in its original mix, imo.

There is something that is happening to my hearing as I get older. Or maybe it is my brain processing the sound. But distortions, reverb, electronic artifacts and a lot of extraneous sounds seemingly overwhelm the music and voices. I am getting more and more intolerant of unnatural sounds in a recording. And I have a hard time hearing dialogue in a movie due to the sound effects. With music the coloration of the microphone overrides the tonality of the vocal. Compression exaggerates distortions and screws up the music for me. It has to be my brain or ears aging rather than a hyper-critical mindset. So many recordings I used to quite admire the sound quality now sounds like trash to me.

Go and get your ears checked mate.
I had to stop listening to music for a while because it sounded like three different bands playing at once. Turned out I had Meniere's disease.
Two Diuretics a day, and a potassium pill and I can listen again.

  14. I’m with you. Every year I appreciate this album more and more. No, it’s not a masterpiece but it’s a really good listen. I’ve Got A Feeling In My Body has that great funk-via-Stax sound, and like you I appreciate the biblical references in such a song that you would think be about any number of tawdry subjects instead. And I love when Elvis bends that note up when he sings ‘daaaayyyyy’.

And If That Isn’t Love is another track I like. Of course, upon only seeing the title one would think it would be a maudlin ballad. But no, it’s religious in its nature. And it works very well in my book.

I wish we’d see these two tracks appear on some of the religious-themed Elvis comps that seem to come out annually.

I remember getting an annual FAA hearing test. They put you in a sound proof booth and they used WWII technology. The sound of the cord from the headset rubbing against your body was LOUDER than the tones generated. On top of that the sound of your own breathing and heart beating was also louder. I came close to passing out holding my breath so I could hear the tones.

I've Got A Feeling In My Body is great for its funkiness. If That Isn't Love belongs on a gospel album and is out of place here.

Look up an Otolaryngology place. I wrestled with doctors for ten years, as it slowly got worse and worse. They just kept saying "it's hearing loss from playing music" ... I say "that isn't logical, it's one damn ear and I use both"
Finally went to Arkansas Otolaryngology and they fixed it, as much as it can be fixed

Good Times is a surprisingly strong album and to me we have not even gotten to the three best performances on the album, I've Got A Thing About You Baby, Good Times Charlie's Got The Blues, and My Boy. I know they are completely opposite ends of the spectrum and one is considered really cool ("Hey, it's a Tony Joe White song,") and one of the others (My Boy) is considered by many to be MOR schlock. I can understand why some fans might feel that way, but again, Elvis's eclectic musical tastes is one of his greatest assets as an artist in my opinion. To Elvis's ears, music was either good or bad, melodically challenging or pedestrian, lyrical strong or words he just could not connect with in a passionate way. I do not think he gave a hoot about what genre his material came from or what popular music critics would think of his choices.

You're probably right about the given hoots but MY BOY still remains for me Elvis' highest position in the I.S.C. (International Schlock Charts.)

I have to admit that's pretty funny. I guess that just another crossover chart that Elvis could have scored highly on. Go Elvis!

I first heard My Boy by Richard Harris. I did not like it. Elvis didn't change that opinion.

I can appreciate Richard Harris the actor, but Richard Harris the singer, not so much. I could see how it might not have left a good taste in your mouth, when Elvis got around to recording it later.

Agreed. A cringe-worthy master from the 1970's era catalogue if there ever was one.

I would have probably extracted the following songs from the 1973 sessions (and I am not crazy about a few of them, including Loving Arms), compiled an LP and relegated most of the others to the archives. Some would have been interesting finds later on in 1995 when the producers of the Essential 70's Masters were combing the vaults for rarities.

    Side 1:
    Promised Land
I've Got A Feeling In My Body
    Loving Arms
If You Talk In Your Sleep
Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues

    Side 2:
I've Got A Thing About You Baby
    For Ol' Times Sake
    You Asked Me To
    There's A Honky Tonk Angel
    Are You Sincere

This song is strong proof that Elvis's period of rest and partial detox did him a good deal of good--there's no way this performance could have derived from the previous Stax session. The old swagger is back. It's been a couple of years since Elvis has hit a song so hard, especially when he stutters the first part of the title. He hasn't sounded this energized on uptempo material since 1970. The song itself is convincing example of funk and Elvis sounds so suited to the genre that it's a pity more swamp funk didn't appear in his later recordings, aside from "If You Talk In Your Sleep."

Had this song been on He Touched Me it would have been a definite highlight. Elvis's vocal swells with oceanic force; his melisma on "fly" is not only majestic but touching. It's been a while since Elvis has sounded this enraptured with a song. Trust a good gospel number about love to bring out a rich performance.
