i don't dispute any of that, but IIRC at some point, the Colonel was effectively getting 75% of the take. i read it in the oral bio by three of the memphis mafia, by Alana Nash, Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, which I heartily recommend.

 

The problem is that Elvis refused to take control of his own career - almost at any point. He did as he was told, and he seemed to like it that way. He apparently hated being in a long term film contract, and then he got out of it, and signed ANOTHER long term contract for Vegas. It's difficult to know whether he was naive, not thinking at the time, or whether he just didn't care about himself or his career. Even in interviews, we get this from him. In 1962 he says that he would someday like to make more serious movies, but he didn't want to move away from the current formula just yet. And then he said exactly the same thing in another interview in 1965. By 1967, he was moaning in interviews that he was stuck in the same formula! Well, frankly, that was HIS fault. It seems that he never wanted to rock the boat - whether that meant trying to get different types of scripts, or sacking the Colonel, or trying to change the format of his shows, or working in a different way, or trying to get to use different music publishers to get better material. Or anything. As long as he was working and getting an income, Elvis just went along for the ride. And, ultimately, he therefore only had himself to blame.

 

yeah, i don't disagree with any of that. he wasn't a businessman, and didn't try hard enough to get someone who would look after his interests. and that's pretty common in the music industry.

 

Elvis grew up dirt poor. Elvis’s father went to prison for forging a check. Once Vernon got out of jail, he couldn’t hold a steady job - the lyric of Polk Salad Annie sums him up: “Daddy was lazy and no ‘count / claimed he had a bad back.” In Tupelo, the Presleys were evicted from multiple rental homes. In Memphis they lived in what today we would call a housing project. Once he hit it big, Elvis liked money. Elvis liked spending money. As I said in this thread? earlier, I recently visited the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, where I saw Elvis’s 1960 custom gold plated Cadillac, which he customized for $65,000 (roughly half a million dollars in today’s money), with diamond flake paint, a television (in 1960!) and a record player inside.

In the 70s, his spending got even more out of control. Elvis staying on the Hollywood treadmill wasn’t all the Colonel’s fault. Elvis was never going to “take control of his career” and deviate from the Elvis movie formula and demand to make art movies that didn’t make him money. Unimaginable wealth came out of nowhere, and, understandably, Elvis feared it could go away just as quickly as it came. Which is why he kept signing those contracts. A more sophisticated, better educated young man might have invested the windfall in stocks, bonds, and real estate and retired young. Elvis didn’t do that. Elvis earned a fortune and he spent a fortune. And he would have done so, I suspect, regardless of who his manager was.

 

True. But in the 70s at least, he would have earned a substantially larger fortune with any other manager possessing basic managerial competence and ethics. The Colonel cost Elvis millions in that decade via bad deals, rejection of good deals, his excessive commission, and malfeasant double-dipping.

 

I think that the Colonel Parker story is a complicated one to say the least. Well, it is so easy to criticize so much of what he did in the last half of Elvis's career. Everything @czeskleba lists about parker's incompetence and lack of ethics is absolutely correct, especially when comparing his management style to modern managers. I would personally like to blame Parker for almost every negative thing that happened to Elvis in his last decade on earth, but I know that really is not fair. I also want to avoid painting with too broad a brush and making a sort of revisionist history of Parker in the early days based on some of the horrible things he did later. I just want the record to be accurate on Parker as much as possible. I will give him great credit for the first five or six years of managing Elvis's career, but I will hold him accountable for his own personal greed and gross mismanagement of Elvis's career during the mid sixties and after 1973. The sale of Elvis's back catalogue to RCA surely rates by itself as one of the worst deals ever in the history of the record industry.

 

Matched only by Murry Wilson selling the Beach Boys’ publishing in 1969 for $700,000. But even the Beatles and their “good” manager were swindled out of untold millions in the Seltaeb U.S. merchandising disaster, and they ultimately lost control of Northern Songs as well. Shel Talmy was still getting a cut of the Who’s earnings into the 70s. The Stones lost everything from their 60s career to Allen Klein. David Bowie was ****ed by Tony Defries and Mainman.

It wasn’t until Peter Grant and Elliott Roberts and their like in the early 70s that rock managers began to get their clients what they truly descerved, and until the 80s that bands such as U2 and R.E.M. took proper control of their business interests from day one.

 

And The Rolling Stones lost everything pre-1971. The history of bands getting screwed in the music racket, er um ‘business’, is sadly long.

This very thread has convinced me to read them! I'll pick the Baby Let's Play House one at the Library this week.

 

I get where you are coming from, but to me knowing about the history of the artist (both the good and the bad) deepens my understanding and enjoyment of the art.

Certainly some folks wallow in the dirt (Goldman) but there's other motivations too. Before his death Marty Lacker had an extensive internet presence and always made himself available to answer fan questions. He didn't shy away from talking about Elvis' flaws, but he always said this was because Elvis was an important historical figure, so it was important that people knew the truth about him, both good and bad.

 

I’m reminded of another Colonel - one who was lauded for capturing Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 and who, by then promoted to Major, was key to winning the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. He had the full trust of George Washington.

But nowadays we remember Benedict Arnold for only one thing.

I'm a bit either way on this track it is a bit of fun and upbeat, but on the cusp of being too silly to actually like for me.

 

This one is definitely speeded up. Probably not as much as the title track but it's still very noticable.

 

Ray Walker's part is a hoot.

 

I like Wolf Call mostly due to the fuzz lead guitar. And the backing vocal is odd enough to be fun. One of the better tracks on the album to me, but upon listening this morning, I think this one is sped up. Edit: Claus beat me to it.

On a related note, the bean counters at Amazon Music must be freaking out at all the plays the album is getting - I’m sure it was ‘zero’ before but there’s now been about 7-8 plays as I’ve been listening to it as we go through this section of the thread.

This is a cheeky little song. It has a lot of potential, but I don't think it quite reaches the mark .... It's still a pleasant enough listen.

 

Do Not Disturb is not bad. Elvis generally has a seduction song or two in his movies.

 

Going back a few songs, here’s the movie version of Spring Fever with female vocals for some verses:



Of course they had to give Shelly Fabares a vocal as she was the singer of Johnny Angel a few years prior. And similar to Ann Margaret’s vocal appearances in VLV, this one wasn’t released on vinyl at the time. Although in this case I’m glad it wasn’t as it isn’t my cup of tea.

 

Well now I get an idea how an Elvis with the Chipmunks would have sounded like.

I like the part around the 1:30 mark when Elvis screws up the lyrics and the engineer tells him his first take is okay to use. Elvis says, "I don't like okay." and then under his breath I believe he says, "I can do better." Elvis still has his humor and he still cares about the quality of his vocals at least on this song and these outtakes. The malaise has not started to set in yet apparently.

I actually do like this song too for some reason. I like the simple melody and the start and stop instrumental breaks at the beginning. That acoustic guitar is really kind of pretty as well and Elvis's voice ain't too shabby either.
