I have just read a few negative comments about it and figured, like most of the rest of the album I was on my own thinking it was a really good track ... To me it is the kind of track that only Genesis or Steeleye Span could pull off
It's really hard to make out if it is a lyric or just a non-specific vocal thing. It's mixed pretty tightly with the music. I can't quite make it out
As for “The Lady Lies,” lyrically this one is an eye roll. But for the music and the performance, fantastic! it’s one of the my top 3 from this.
I don't care very much for "Lady Lies". It's too long. Another weak track in Side 2. However, I do enjoy the live version, with Phil's "on character" vocals and the great jazzy coda.
Recently watched some live clips from this period and realized I like post Gabriel Genesis better when listening to it than when watching it. Don't find Phil visually works that well as a front man.
I'm not a fan of The Lady Lies, and always considered it one of the bad tracks on the album. But revisiting it for this thread, the ones I designate as "bad" really aren't bad at all. They're just not up to the usual Genesis standard, I suppose. Anyway, I think TLL is too long, I don't care for the stripper synths in the intro and throughout the song and I'm not a fan of the lyrics. On the other hand, I do like Tony's use of acoustic piano, the part that starts with "Come with me I need you, I fear the dark and I live all alone" and Phil's drumming is quite different from anything else heard on the album.

I can understand that. Completely different in their approach, which is probably better that he was really ... I'm not sure the costumes would have worked for Phil lol
Great song, great recording of a great performance! The lyrics should be read as tongue-in-cheek, imo; certainly Phil's "hamming it up" on stage with the "vaudeville villain routine" helps project more than a little irony on to the song's story. I *hope* it's not a sincere lyric, in other words, and it helps *me* enjoy this track more to believe I'm right! Great piano, bass & drums on the outro, too! And the middle keyboard solo part is one of my top Genesis moments!
remember that video a few pages back, apperently this is the uncut version, didnt realise it was out there. Its more "Three days with the roadies" then with the band itself, but its fun to seeing rigging up those huge mirrors, also interview with alan Owen (light designer with the band up to the 92 tour). My favorite bit is Mike enjoying a sandwich and a cig just before the Leiden concert (at groenoordhallen, wich is where they normally do cattle market, also it was the place where the infamous "Booo-ing incident" occured in 1982 with the band).
I don't like that much the "stripper's" riff, like most of Tony's melodies in this album. And at this point in this album, when I listened in its entirety, I was already "fatigued" by too much meh to pay much attention. FYFM brought some relief because it was striking different. Anyway. This is maybe the only track I'm revaluing a bit thanks to the thread. Clunky lyrics at times but the arrangement's flow is remarkable, with the steady and progressive building to the climaxes before the chorus. Dynamics here are less blatant and obvious than in other songs I mentioned before, yet are there, and flow up and down. Plus, a story about the destructive power of desires and luring demon-maidens always wins.
I'm only a little unsure about the "So glad you saw fit to pay a call." bit. What does it mean? Why calling? Maybe it does imply the hero actually escaped but came back some time later, enslaved by his desire?
The Lady Lies---One of my favorite Genesis tracks of the post-Hackett era....I love the synthesizers throughout the song, they remind me of some section of "In That Quiet Earth". The lyrics don't bother me at all, even if the story itself has been told hundreds of times. Must be a really good (universal) story if it's been told that often, and in so many different ways. Love the jazzy outro, I honestly wouldn't mind if that went on for another 5 minutes or so. Lots of little jazzy touches on outros on this side....Scenes from a Night's Dream, Say It's Alright Joe, and this one. I prefer proper endings to fade outs, and now that I think of it, there's a lot of fade outs on this album.
I just find it a little unfitting that a hero with a sword that fights monsters taking girls out of their mouths, leading them to a hut in the middle of the wood, can have a phone. Landline or mobile that is. But I suppose there are medieval alternatives for that. Like messengers or pigeons. I'm a little too anal sometimes.
“Paying a call” is a primarily British term, predating the use of telephones. It means to make a brief visit.
The Lady Lies is a great song, reminiscent of days if yore. Not fond of the bluesy intro, but love the outro. --Geoff
The set up on the far left of the stage is not a drum kit, formally, but just a collection of percussion instruments which are played by both Phil and Chester at various points during the concert.
On the “Duke” and “Abacab” tours, Phil had a small percussion set up by Tony’s keyboards, which included a drum machine and bass pedals, the latter played by Phil with his hands. Daryl never used it.
I think of the Tennessee Williams play "The Glass Menagerie", where the shy girl spends much of the story waiting for her "gentleman caller".
It was not a 12 minute segment. The medley of pop, Motown, and rock songs was a less than two minute sequence during an extended version of “Turn It On Again” played as an encore. It was both tribute and tongue-in-cheek. I find it difficult to understand why some folks get so disturbed by it.
